Next Event:
Pick an June date and drop the commodore a note.

May includes the Chico Yacht Club's boat camping on Lake Oroville (May 14-15). If you are near floating camp #1 drop by and say hello. If there is a weekend anyone wants to sail, just drop the BSC Commodore a note and it will be posted to all.
Future Event: Memorial Day Regatta on Saturday May 29th and Sunday May 30th on Lake Whiskeytown.

This is an annual major regatta for the Whiskeytown Sailing Club. The water is clear, the races are well-organized, and the winds can be challenging. Several Butte Counties boats are planning to make the trip. Keep this one in mind and put it on your calendar.
View the Lake Oroville level plot from January 1, 2009 to today

All ramps are open. The current elevation is 810 feet (May 12), only 90 feet below the top and slightly above4 last year's level. The bad news is that it is only 64% full (most of the water is in the top of the lake. At least the alfalfa down south won't be thirsty.

5/12/2010 10:15:56 PMpmelconWhiskeytown Sailing Club is having their annual two-day regatta in Redding (Lake Whiskeytown) on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Their facility is excellent and sailing on shifting lake winds can be a challenge. Look for a link on the events page.
5/12/2010 1:01:48 AMpaulChico Yacht Club has their floating campground on Lake Oroville this weekend. Wade and the Raven hope to be on the lake one day--there should be room for a few more boats as the level is at 925 feet. Winds are problematic at this point but the air temp will be in the 80s. I hope to be there on Saturday.
4/12/2010 6:54:54 PMPaulThe next regatta is the MHRA Chico Classic on May 1-2. Although the regatta is for multihulls, there is lots of room on the lake and all sailors are welcome.

March Woolie Boolie--Gallery     A hopeful group of BSC sailors met at the Lake Oroville spillway ramp on a cloudy morning with intermittent light showers. The group on the tarmac helped one another set up and waited for the wind to arrive. Although it was always light, there was on small squall line that got boats planing and the catamarans hull in the air. New boats were a McGregor 24 and a Flying Scot. A windmill wound its way down from Reno and Wade got the red Thistle out of mothballs. Wood boats are just prettier.

Waiting for the wind to fill and swapping stories. By the way, Lake Oroville is now an astonishing $13 per boat.

The best part of sailing is the group of people who turn out. Water time is always special and it was interesting to see the various boats wander around the lake. The sun finally came out (killing the wind) and only the McGregor and the Flying Scot made it under the bridge. They had, of course, motors to get back home. It was another pleasant Late winter sail.

Welcome to the Butte Sailing Club website. We're a low-key group of sailors. We emphasize recreational sailing and club-level racing. Our boats are trailerable and range in size from ten to twenty-four feet. We emphasize that sailing should be fun. Our focus is on sailing well while helping one another. Water safety is our club's first priority.

In short, the Butte Sailing Club is a place to learn about sailing, engage in spirited racing, and enjoy one another's company both on and off the water. Consider joining us at any of our events. There is a minimal membership fee ($10 per year). Guests boats and crew are welcome at any event without charge. We encourage prospective members with sailboats of all types, as well as those who may be just looking at this terrific way to spend time.

Regardless of where you are, feel free to contact this site for help in rigging or restoring your sailboat. We have been able to help many residents of Northern California get their boats in the water.
