Tempest History
1960-1965 Designed by Ian Proctor during a range of IYRU trials
1969 Selected by the IYRU for the 1972 Olympics
1976 Used for the last time in the Olympics
1990 Redesigned by Ian Proctor
2000 New Class Rules Adopted

Today, people sail Tempests because they are remarkable boats, unsurpassed by many newer designs. Worldwide competition in the class isnt as intense as in the Olympic years, but new boats and new sails are being built. It seems that old boats dont deteriorate more quickly than the people who sail them. So while the average age of Tempest sailors is increasing, the boats continue to keep on sailing!
