Sycamore Cove Story by Paul Ritchie

Paul Ritchie and Jay Lewis rigging up Paul's Hunter 216

Helping Rig the Prindle Catamaran were, (R. to L) Mary Beth Hert(?) and Courtney Casey.

New Members, Betty and John Lucas with their recently aquired Hobie 16 in the background.

Courtney Casey looking very relaxed while the wind was still light.

Dan Helmick is a Thistle sailor from way back, but enjoyed crewing on the Commodore's cat for this day.

Here, the Hunter's chute is going up but it had not yet been trimmed.

Here everything looks great except for the glassy water ahead. We had to cope with inconsistent breezes for over an hour before the good stuff finally arrived.

Another nice shot of the Hunter with Chute up. Pretty, huh?

You can see the Hwy 162 bridge in the background, but there was no wind in that direction for over an hour...

Spinnakers are so photogenic, aren't they?

... speaking of photogenic...

We saw these folks coming out of the Spillway Cove and went over to say hello.

They were 4 up sailing in shade all day with a bimini top. Cool!

After outruning the wind down towards the bridge, Paul and crew beat back up near the dam where the wind was much better.

We drifted around for a while, but the conversation was spirited! Photo: Paul Ritchie

When the wind is this dead, it's a good time to stretch out and relax. Photo: Paul Ritchie

That Prindle's mylar mainsail has a lot of shape. The full length battens give it a semi rigid wing-like foil. Photo: Paul Ritchie

This shot was taken as the Hunter motored toward the marina for a little lunch. Just about the time they disappeared, the wind started filling in. Thanks Paul for your sacrifice.

We had to accept the fact that we couldn't go up towards Sycamore cove until the wind filled in. Oh well. That's why sailing is so addictive.

.
We eventually got some decent wind (5-13) and high-tailed it for the bridge. Due to time constraints, we did not go to Sycamore Cove, but we did get to pass under the Bridge.

The view of the 162 Bridge was beautiful. The lake level was only 18 feet down from max. capacity, so we opted to go around the ends where the clearance is better. I am glad we did!

As we approached the pillars supporting the south end of the bridge, Dan Helmick kept saying that we had plenty of room....

We ended up clearing it by 4 or 5 feet. However, we would not have made it under the middle span.

I snapped away as we passed under. I think this particular bridge is pretty cool.

I am always careful sailing around the pylons of the bridge. The wind does some pretty wierd things and you never know
when a jet ski is going to jump out and surprise you.

Dan Helmick holding the boat at the end of our sail. We had some great rides, flying a hull and tearing up that lake. I wish I had taken photos but ....
